What Does a Pitch Shifter Do?

A pitch shifter raises or lowers the musical pitch of a recording without speeding it up or slowing it down. Shift a track up two semitones and every note sounds two semitones higher, but the song still lasts exactly as long and the rhythm stays locked in place.

That separation of pitch and speed is the whole trick. Old tape machines and turntables could only change both together — faster meant higher, slower meant lower. A modern pitch shifter uses time-stretching under the hood so you can move the pitch alone, which is what you want for practicing, singing along, or matching one track to another.

How to Shift Pitch Online

1

Open your audio file

Go to the pitch shifter and choose your file — MP3, WAV, and other common formats work. Everything is processed on your device; nothing is uploaded to a server.

2

Pick the shift amount

Move the pitch slider up or down in semitones. One semitone is the distance between two neighboring piano keys, so +2 moves a song from C to D, and -2 moves it from C to B♭.

3

Preview in real time

Press play and adjust the slider while listening. The change applies instantly, so you can fine-tune by ear until the track sits where you want it.

4

Process and download

When it sounds right, process the track and download the shifted version as MP3 or WAV. The original file on your device is never modified.

Common Pitch Shifts and When to Use Them

There is no single correct amount — it depends on why you are shifting. These four moves cover most real situations:

+1 to +2 semitones

A subtle lift. Useful for nudging a backing track up to a brighter key, or matching a song to an instrument tuned slightly sharp.

+3 to +5 semitones

A clearly different key. Singers use this range to move a song written for a low voice up into a comfortable range.

-1 to -2 semitones

The classic "half step down" — many bands tune down a semitone live, so shifting the studio version down lets you play along with standard tuning.

-3 to -5 semitones

A big drop. Brings soaring vocal lines down for lower voices, or creates a heavier, darker feel for remixes and covers.

How Far Can You Shift Before It Sounds Odd?

Small shifts of one to three semitones usually sound natural on full songs. Beyond about five semitones, voices start to take on a noticeably processed character — vowels smear and the singer stops sounding like themselves. Instrumental music tolerates larger shifts than vocals do.

If you need a big change, listen critically to the busiest part of the song before committing. Dense mixes with heavy bass reveal artifacts sooner than sparse acoustic tracks. Working from a WAV or high-bitrate MP3 also helps, since compression artifacts get amplified by shifting.

Pitch Shifter FAQ

Is this pitch shifter really free?

Yes. The pitch shifter is completely free with no signup, no watermarks, and no processing limits. It runs entirely in your browser.

Does shifting the pitch change the speed of the song?

No. The pitch shifter changes only the pitch — the song keeps its exact original tempo and length. If you want to change speed as well, the same tool has an independent speed control.

What is the difference between a pitch shifter and a pitch changer?

Nothing — they are two names for the same thing. Musicians and audio engineers tend to say "pitch shifter," while casual users say "pitch changer." Both raise or lower pitch without affecting speed.

Do my audio files get uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your files never leave your device, which also means there are no file-size delays from uploading.

How many semitones can I shift?

You can shift up to 12 semitones (a full octave) in either direction. Most musical uses stay within about five semitones — beyond that, expect an audibly processed sound, especially on vocals.
